Neuro-cognitive Systems Involved in Morality
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we will consider the neuro-cognitive systems involved in mediating morality. Five main claims will be made. First, that there are multiple, partially separable neuro-cognitive architectures that mediate specific aspects of morality: social convention, care-based morality, disgust-based morality and fairness/justice. Second, that all aspects of morality, including social convention, involve affect. Third, that the neural system particularly important for social convention, given its role in mediating anger and responding to angry expressions, is ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. Fourth, that the neural systems particularly important for carebased morality are the amygdala and medial orbital frontal cortex. Fifth, that while Theory of Mind is not a prerequisite for the development of affect-based ‘automatic moral attitudes’, it is critically involved in many aspects of moral reasoning.

Neuro-ACT Cognitive Architecture Applications in Modeling Driver’s Steering Behavior in Turns
Cognitive Architectures (CAs) are the core of artificial cognitive systems. A CA is supposed to specify the human brain at a level of abstraction suitable for explaining how it achieves the functions of the mind. Over the years a number of distinct CAs have been proposed by different authors and their limitations and potentials were investigated. These CAs are usually classified as symbolic and...
متن کاملAt the heart of morality lies neuro-visceral integration: lower cardiac vagal tone predicts utilitarian moral judgment.
To not harm others is widely considered the most basic element of human morality. The aversion to harm others can be either rooted in the outcomes of an action (utilitarianism) or reactions to the action itself (deontology). We speculated that the human moral judgments rely on the integration of neural computations of harm and visceral reactions. The present research examined whether utilitaria...
متن کاملBeyond Point-and-Shoot Morality: Why Cognitive (Neuro)Science Matters for Ethics
In this article I explain why cognitive science (including some neuroscience) matters for normative ethics. First, I describe the dual-process theory of moral judgment and briefly summarize the evidence supporting it. Next I describe related experimental research examining influences on intuitive moral judgment. I then describe two ways in which research along these lines can have implications ...

Introduction: Aging is a process in which physiological and psychological changes, especially cognitive changes, are observed. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of neuro-feedback on the alpha frequency band and beta frequency band at points (F3, F4) in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. Methods: For this purpose, in this semi-experimental research, 30 peo...
متن کاملCognitive requirements of competing neuro-behavioral decision systems: some implications of temporal horizon for managerial behavior in organizations
Interpretation of managerial activity in terms of neuroscience is typically concerned with extreme behaviors such as corporate fraud or reckless investment (Peterson, 2007; Wargo et al., 2010a). This paper is concerned to map out the neurophysiological and cognitive mechanisms at work across the spectrum of managerial behaviors encountered in more day-to-day contexts. It proposes that the compe...
